Philadelphia: Key and Biddle, 1836. 1st Edition. Tables, diagrams. 1/2 leather. Octavo. vii, 216, 174, 16 pages. Near Fine. This copy has been rebound in half leather with marbled paper sides, gilt-stamped rule to spine and boards, gilt-stamped title on red title block on spine. Some mild foxing scattered through text.

The first book by this pioneering oceanographer and astronomer. Maury's extensive work charting ocean currents would earn him the nickname "Pathfinder of the Seas." He served in the Confederate Navy during the Civil War, doing controversial work on mines and torpedoes. This copy retains the original blank preliminary leaves, with contemporaneous prior ownership markings, "John W. Cole's book, Camden County, New Jersey," etc. Also penned at top of title page, "U. S. S. Vincennes / 1843." Very handsome rebound copy of this maritime high spot.
