Joseph Edwards had designed the ship-mounted "Edwards Cataract Pump" for hydraulic dredging, and was called upon to deepen the southern entrance to New York Harbor. The work was completed so satisfactorily that Edwards was inundated with requests by engineers and others contemplating similar projects elsewhere. This report was prepared as an account of how the work was accomplished in New York Harbor, with detailed description and illustrations of the means employed. There is a fold-out map of the Lower Bay and 5 fold-out plates showing details of the dredging steamer "Reliance" and her equipment.
