Autograph Letter to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Discussing Anthony's Warm Reception in the South

Dated March 18, 1885 on stationery of the National Woman Suffrage Association. Susan B. Anthony made her first visit to the South when she arrived at New Orleans in early March, 1885 to attend the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition. The local chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union hosted members of the National Woman Suffrage Association so they could introduce themselves and speak to visitors of the exposition. This letter opens with an apology for an "un-business like receipt." Mrs. Anthony then happily reports that "These Southern women are all fired with the love of freedom--and will demonstrate the fact so soon as we can make a canvass of the [indecipherable word]--which we must do at earliest moment." Susan B. Anthony tended to address her correspondence quite formally, so the very familiar greeting of "My Dear Friend" along with letter's clear concern with the business of the N.W.S.A. suggest that the addressee is Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
