Songs from the Trenches: The Soul of the A. E. F.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, (1918). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi, 207 pages. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. Bound in brown quarter cloth with tan paper sides, spine titled in gilt. Prior owner bookplate of John Maurice Deyo and Susan Perry Deyo on front pastedown. Jacket has just a few hints of edge wear.

This collection of poems is selected from entries submitted by American soldiers and sailors to a competition by The New York Herald. Intended as a message to "the home folks, written on the decks of transports, in French villages, in muddy camps, in the trenches, beside cannon or camion, in hospitals." A great piece of related ephemera is laid in--a donation slip from the Library War Service, soliciting book donations for the troops. The top of this slip is a perforated bookplate meant to be affixed to the donated book. The bookplate is illustrated by C. B. Falls' iconic image of a standing soldier in profile carrying a towering stack of books.
