Three Lives: Stories of the Good Anna, Melanctha and the Gentle Lena

New York: Grafton Press, 1909. 1st Edition. Full cloth. Octavo. 279 pages. Very Good. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in gilt. Chipping to cloth at head and heel of spine to a depth of about 1/8". Newspaper-clipped photograph by Man Ray showing Stein in the mid-1920s is tipped to front pastedown. Some minor browning to front endpapers and a slightly rusted paperclip impression to first 2 leaves from a small group of Stein-related newspaper clippings (now in a Mylar sleeve). Gilt spine titles a bit dull, those on upper board remain bright. Hinges sound. All in all a clean and sound copy.

Gertrude Stein's first published book. Consists of three independent stories, all set in a fictionalized Baltimore. There were 500 copies in this edition, which Stein printed at her own expense. Laid into this copy is a 1934 announcement of the New York premiere of "4 Saints in 3 Acts," an opera with a libretto by Stein. This announcement is printed on silver paper and is illustrated with the 1931 photograph of Stein by George Platt Lynes.
