Item #11670 Pure Ice (advertising leaflet). Annapolis, Joseph S. M. Basil.

Pure Ice (advertising leaflet)

[Annapolis]: Maryland Republican, [c.1880s]. Broadside. 4.5" x 7" Very Good. Small leaflet typeset with a corner-ornamented border.

Joseph Basil was one of the foremost merchants of Annapolis in the mid to late 19th century. He had started out as a carpenter, save a little money, and with $75 started a small grocery business on Market Space in Annapolis. This eventually grew to encompass multiple buildings and supply everything from groceries to lumber, coal, and...ice. This leaflet urges his customers to place advance orders for ice rather than "...having to take it at any time the wagon should come along." This one was not completed, but has spaces for the number of pounds desired and time to be delivered. Only the customer's name is requested...presumably Basil knew everyone and where they lived. A charming piece of Annapolis history.
